(UPDATE on my father-in-law: My husband called his stepmother at 7:15 PST this morning and he was told that his father had just been taken from his room for his surgery. She didn't know how long the procedure was supposed to last. Stomach doing flip flops and my eye lid is twitching ... I'm very anxious and not good with this kind of stuff. Thank you all so much for your kind words and prayers, I so appreciate your words and your care and concern!)
Happy Vintage Thingie Thursday!
I found my Blue Bird book from 1962! Fun fun fun! And possibly even more fun, I found the list of girls in my troop. I read each name to myself and could conjure up memories of almost every one of them. And you know that was a long long long time ago for this brain!
Were you a Blue Bird or a Brownie? I was a Blue Bird because my mother was a Camp Fire Girl when she was young, but I really was a Brownie wannabe. Boo hoo!
Here is the cover of the book and some pages ...
when we "flew up" to be Camp Fire Girls.
I'm the brunette and the blonde is Debbie,
who was my best friend for many years.
We are in her backyard celebrating.

Oh, I remember this well! I had a vest with tons of beads sewn on from blue birds! What fun to see this book again, thinking about your father in law....happy VTT!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the update and I am praying for his better health. I was also a bluebird (for a year) and can't say I remember either what Wo-He-Lo means but could be...World, Health, Love? shot in the dark. Those are sweet pictures and I am sure sweet memories.
ReplyDeleteHi Suzanne!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you enjoyed the Blue Bird memories and thank you so very much for your good thoughts for FIL! Thanks again for hosting VTT.
Happy Thursday,
Sally
Hi Jenny!
ReplyDeleteHope all is well with you!
Thank you so much for your prayers and friendship, I so appreciate it.
Hey! So fun that you were a BB too. I thought for sure I was going to be the only blue bird and you and Suzanne both were BB's! Now that you say that, I'm thinking "WO" might stand for Work? Time to do some googling. ;)
Happy Thursday,
Sally
Ok, I'll break the mold and be the lone Brownie! I think it was in Girl Scouts where I learned my love of crafts and field trips. You've brought back lots of good memories!
ReplyDeleteHi ewenique!
ReplyDeleteI knew the Brownies would show up! :) Brownies always seemed so much cooler to me. Good gosh, you had cookies and we had those mints teehee. BLECH!
Happy VTT,
Sally
I was a brownie. What innocent days these were. Happy VTT - great choice.
ReplyDeleteHow cute! I was a Brownie and Girl Scout. We had a special ceremony to. I remember those days well. :)

Hi Liz!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you enjoyed it!
Happy VTT,
Sally
Your book is cute. I was a Brownie. there weren't any Blue Birds or Camp Fire Girls where I lived.
ReplyDeleteHi Postcardy!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for visiting. I think there were a lot fewer Camp Fire Girls than Girl Scouts???
Happy VTT!
Sally
What a fun post! I was a Brownie! Very fun memories :)
ReplyDeleteI love the pages of the Bluebird book! I was a Brownie myself. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Gail!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for visiting my little blog! Glad you had fun. :)
Happy VTT!
Sally
Hi Nancy!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for visiting! I just knew the Brownies were going to outnumber the Blue Birds! :) The illustrations are really cute in the book.
Happy VTT!
Sally
Oh, Sally! I was a Bluebird and a Campfire Girl, too! hee hee! And Wo-he-lo means "Work, help, love" (I think!). We really should be next door neighbors! lol! So glad your FIL is doing well. :) xox!
ReplyDeleteSo cool! I was signed up to be a Blue Bird, but they didn't get enough to have a group :(
ReplyDeleteThey didn't have Girls Scouts or Brownies in my town, ah well..
*hugs*deb
When I was growing up, I am not sure they had things you could participate in. Even if they had, I would not have been able to join. I had to work in our fields. Nice post for today.
ReplyDeleteHi Pammie!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Whew! FIL made it over the first hurdle.
Well of course you were a Bluebird and a Campfire Girl, you are a kindred spirit! ;) Did you go to the camp in the mountains with them? I wish I could remember the name of it. Thanks for the translation of Wo-He-Lo!
I thought of you this morning ... while I was hunting for my photographs, I found a program from the Renaissance Fair for 1970. So fun!
Happy Thursday,
Sally xoxoxo
Oh Sally! I came by to find my award and am so taken with your Bluebird post! It's just so American! I absolutely love your photographs. Thank you so much for sharing, and thank you so much for my award! Elizabeth
ReplyDeleteHi Deb!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for visiting. Oh no! I'm so sorry you didn't get to be a Blue Bird, that makes me sad. :(
Happy VTT!
Sally
I found it! Thank you so much! By the way, this month when I make a peg doll in my red, white, and blue theme, it will be a Bluebird, and it will be for you! I am nuts for uniforms! E
ReplyDeleteHi LV!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I loved your post today.
Your comment made me realize I have no idea when the Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Girls began? My mom was born in 1921 and she was a Camp Fire Girl, so I guess that would mean they would have been around in the 30's at least.
I'm sorry you wouldn't have been able to join in - my father had to work in the fields too. I need to ask him how old he was when he started. I have a picture of him when he's very small, picking strawberries with his two cousins.
Happy Thursday,
Sally
Hi Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteYou're so sweet, thank you! You know, I can't think of, or say "bluebird" without thinking of you now. :)
You're very welcome for the award and oh my gosh! A peg doll for me??? I'm giddy with happiness, thank you thank you thank you, that's so very sweet of you. I'm so touched. :)
Happy Thursday,
Sally
Your memories are wonderful, the booklet and the pictures are priceless. I was a Blue Bird and my Mom was the leader of our group. That was many years ago. One of my favorite memories was when we had a doll parade down main street, carried our favorite doll. Happy VTT
ReplyDeleteI love these; I was a brownie! I remember it well; Good times~ YOU are so cute, in your uniform!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the pics, really sweet to look back and
have wonderful, fond memories~!
What a terrific memento. You girls looks so cute in your uniforms.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad your FIL came through his surgery okay.
Great Blue Bird memories! I was a Brownie, but after I flew up to be a Girl Scout, it didn't last long for me. Still, we had some good times while it lasted, and looks like you did too. Always the tallest--story of my life too!
ReplyDeleteYou were very fortunate, I begged to join the girlguides but it never happened-i was definitely a deprived child!
ReplyDeleteI never participated in groups like those but they sound like so much fun. Those photos are great!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! I was a Girl Scout and have similar fond memories. Happy VTT!
ReplyDeleteI was a Camp Fire girl! Wo-He-Lo is Work, Health, Love. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteSarah
Lovely post! I was a Girl Scout, and just read today in the newspaper that the organization came to Finland (from Great Britain) 100 years ago.
ReplyDeleteWonderful post! Terrific pictures of your and your friends in your uniforms.
ReplyDeleteI was a Brownie and now seeing your post...oh I wish I had been a Blue Bird. Your uniforms are much nicer and I love the Blue Bird Wish List...especially the one to keep your temper MOST of the time! How kid friendly (and healthy) is that!
Hi Ann!
ReplyDeleteMy mom was one of the leaders too. I love that you had a doll parade, so very sweet!
Happy VTT and Happy Memorial Day!
Sally
Hi Ellie!

Happy VTT and Happy Memorial Day!

Hi Roslyn!
ReplyDeleteOh no! I'm so sorry you weren't able to join one of these groups. Did you possibly have music lessons? I never had them and feel so deprived about that, really feel I missed something so important. WAH!
Happy VTT and Happy Memorial Day!
Sally
Hi Lori!
ReplyDeleteWere they not available in your area or had they gone out of fashion (I know you're a young whipper snapper compared to me.)?
In retrospect I think they were a lot of fun - I was such an angst ridden child that I'm not sure if I enjoyed them fully at the time though???
Happy VTT and Happy Memorial Day!
Sally
Hi Serendipity Handmade!

ReplyDeleteYou're so sweet, thank you!
Isn't it funny, the grass is always greener, huh?! I always thought that Brownie uniforms were cuter.
Happy VTT and Happy Memorial Day!
Sally
What a fun book! And great pictures!~ I was a Brownie then Girl Scout. My mom was a leader in both with me.
ReplyDeleteBrownie here..then a Girl Scout. Brownies were all about the little fairies..who did good deeds. We went to camps..and to summer day camps. I swear this is where I get my camping want-a-be's from. I remember putting in latrines..stringing Paper towels on a rope with a bar of soap...learning to always take care of your camp..and to always be prepared.Anyone who knows me..knows it stuck to me!!! I'm the Queen of being prepared...lol
ReplyDeleteI knew a few bluebirds..I can remember we were rivals back then in school. So silly now that I think of it!!
I'm glad to know some grownup Bluebirds!!
Cindy from Rick-Rack and Gingham
Hi Diann!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to be so tardy in replying - I only just noticed that I had more comments on this post. So glad you enjoyed it. My mom was one of our leaders - I can't seem to remember whose mother was the main one???
Happy Weekend!
Sally
Hi Cindy!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry, I didn't realize I had more comments on this thread. Thank you so much for visiting my blog and your fun comments. I can remember there being a definite rivalry between the two groups too.
Happy weekend to you!
