Vintage Blue Bird Thingie Thursday

UPDATE on my father-in-law: My husband called at 12:30 PST and said that he had heard from his stepmother - she said FIL had made it through the surgery just fine and was back in his room. WHEW! Thanks again for all of your support!

(UPDATE on my father-in-law: My husband called his stepmother at 7:15 PST this morning and he was told that his father had just been taken from his room for his surgery. She didn't know how long the procedure was supposed to last. Stomach doing flip flops and my eye lid is twitching ... I'm very anxious and not good with this kind of stuff. Thank you all so much for your kind words and prayers, I so appreciate your words and your care and concern!)

(Please visit Suzanne at Colorado Lady for info about Vintage Thingie Thursday.)

Happy Vintage Thingie Thursday!

I found my Blue Bird book from 1962! Fun fun fun! And possibly even more fun, I found the list of girls in my troop. I read each name to myself and could conjure up memories of almost every one of them. And you know that was a long long long time ago for this brain!

Were you a Blue Bird or a Brownie? I was a Blue Bird because my mother was a Camp Fire Girl when she was young, but I really was a Brownie wannabe. Boo hoo!

Here is the cover of the book and some pages ...

And here are some photos from May 1963 (gasp!),
when we "flew up" to be Camp Fire Girls.

I'm the brunette and the blonde is Debbie,
who was my best friend for many years.
We are in her backyard celebrating.

Camp Fire Girl diorama (tablescape teehee!) by Debbie's mother.

Debbie, me (Sally), Nancy, Paula and Francine. I remember you guys!!!
I have no idea what wo-he-lo means???!

Paula, Debbie, Francine and me (always the tallest!).

  2. Thank you for the update and I am praying for his better health. I was also a bluebird (for a year) and can't say I remember either what Wo-He-Lo means but could be...World, Health, Love? shot in the dark. Those are sweet pictures and I am sure sweet memories.

Hope all is well with you!
Thank you so much for your prayers and friendship, I so appreciate it.
Hey! So fun that you were a BB too. I thought for sure I was going to be the only blue bird and you and Suzanne both were BB's! Now that you say that, I'm thinking "WO" might stand for Work? Time to do some googling. ;)
    Happy Thursday,

  5. Ok, I'll break the mold and be the lone Brownie! I think it was in Girl Scouts where I learned my love of crafts and field trips. You've brought back lots of good memories!

  19. When I was growing up, I am not sure they had things you could participate in. Even if they had, I would not have been able to join. I had to work in our fields. Nice post for today.

  20. Hi Pammie!
Thank you. Whew! FIL made it over the first hurdle.
Well of course you were a Bluebird and a Campfire Girl, you are a kindred spirit! ;) Did you go to the camp in the mountains with them? I wish I could remember the name of it. Thanks for the translation of Wo-He-Lo!
I thought of you this morning ... while I was hunting for my photographs, I found a program from the Renaissance Fair for 1970. So fun!
    Happy Thursday,

  24. Hi LV!
Thank you! I loved your post today.
Your comment made me realize I have no idea when the Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Girls began? My mom was born in 1921 and she was a Camp Fire Girl, so I guess that would mean they would have been around in the 30's at least.
I'm sorry you wouldn't have been able to join in - my father had to work in the fields too. I need to ask him how old he was when he started. I have a picture of him when he's very small, picking strawberries with his two cousins.

    Happy Thursday,
    Sally

  26. Your memories are wonderful, the booklet and the pictures are priceless. I was a Blue Bird and my Mom was the leader of our group. That was many years ago. One of my favorite memories was when we had a doll parade down main street, carried our favorite doll. Happy VTT

  29. Great Blue Bird memories! I was a Brownie, but after I flew up to be a Girl Scout, it didn't last long for me. Still, we had some good times while it lasted, and looks like you did too. Always the tallest--story of my life too!

  35. Wonderful post! Terrific pictures of your and your friends in your uniforms.

I was a Brownie and now seeing your post...oh I wish I had been a Blue Bird. Your uniforms are much nicer and I love the Blue Bird Wish List...especially the one to keep your temper MOST of the time! How kid friendly (and healthy) is that!

Oh no! I'm so sorry you weren't able to join one of these groups. Did you possibly have music lessons? I never had them and feel so deprived about that, really feel I missed something so important. WAH!

  41. Hi Lori!
Were they not available in your area or had they gone out of fashion (I know you're a young whipper snapper compared to me.)?
In retrospect I think they were a lot of fun - I was such an angst ridden child that I'm not sure if I enjoyed them fully at the time though???

  47. Brownie here..then a Girl Scout. Brownies were all about the little fairies..who did good deeds. We went to camps..and to summer day camps. I swear this is where I get my camping want-a-be's from. I remember putting in latrines..stringing Paper towels on a rope with a bar of soap...learning to always take care of your camp..and to always be prepared.Anyone who knows me..knows it stuck to me!!! I'm the Queen of being prepared...lol

I knew a few bluebirds..I can remember we were rivals back then in school. So silly now that I think of it!!

I'm glad to know some grownup Bluebirds!!
