I've only just begun unwrapping my mothers ornaments, I have an enormous box to go through. I keep stopping and lingering over each one. So many memories attached to nearly all of them. Tiny bits from my youngest of childhood memories, in fact those vintage ones predate my arrival. I don't know if they were purchased during my brothers first Christmases? Or if even earlier, perhaps my newlywed mother picked them out for their home? There are so many ones that we found while shopping together over the years ... department stores, craft shows, home boutiques (we shared a BIG love of home boutiques and handmade ornaments) ... some made for her by her friends. I'm not sure of the origins of the Santa painting, it arrived sometime after I left home. It's a charming little original painting, I assume done by or gifted to her by a friend.

DeleteIsn't the painting fun?! I will have to get it framed. Whoever gave it to my mother, just slipped it between a mat and some cardboard and presented it to her, & my mom never framed it.

ReplyDeleteWhat sweet ornaments...and, oh, how I love the candy cane coat hanger. My gramma used to make us them for Christmas and birthdays. She's been gone for over twenty years and mine are wearing out. Don't you just treasure your older ornaments? They have such a sweetness that the newer ones just don't have.
Oh...You are so thoughtful to comment about your geneaology study. I 'm glad you are having a good experience with the LDS site. I think I will try that, too. Ancestry.com is a bit expensive to join and right now we don't have the money to spend on such a luxury.

Hi Carolynn! You have excellent eyesight! I didn't think anyone would see the coat hanger, I cropped so much of it out of the photo. ;) I have memories of them as a small girl. Yes, I adore my old ornaments so much - I'm a big sentimental goober and I love anything that gives me a lump in my throat and tugs at my heart.
DeleteYou're so very welcome! It is familysearch.org and they've done a really good job with entering Swedish records. If I understood correctly, it was the law in Sweden that you had to register births so that's very helpful. I only wish I could know more details about my ancestors but I guess that's too much to ask.

Don't you love getting lost in all of those wonderful memories? I have found lots of vintage ornaments throughout the years but my most favorite ones are the ones that belonged to my grandmother. I only have a few but they are priceless to me.

I just unpacked some Christmas things that I grew up with, and they're like seeing an old friend again! I think it's so wonderful that you have all of these things of your Mom's. That little putz house is so sweet, and that painting is one of the most charming things I've seen in a long time!

I think the hardest part of Christmas is memories of lost loved ones. I get pleasure from those great memories but also sadness that they are no longer with us. These are wonderful memories of Christmas's past. Thank you for the lovely post.

I just dropped in from Vintage Thingie Thursday - I feel your pain - I just lost my mother in August and my mother in law in September - it is almost too much to comprehend. But, I have a lot of ornaments and decorations from both my mother and grandmother - that's the only way I want to decorate now - with vintage!!
