Woof Woof Arf Arf REDnesday

(Please visit Sue at It's A Very Cherry World to find out about REDnesday!)

Happy Rednesday!

We went to a yard sale last Friday and I got some fun paper things from a woman who used to sell at Antique Malls, Flea Markets, etc. I could kick myself to the moon and back for not buying more of her stuff. But one does feel the need to rein oneself in when their (cracker box of a) home is already filled to overflowing with stuff. AND you have visions of being those people on the evening news, knocked unconscious and flattened by all of their stuff bwahhahahhaha.

Two of the things I brought home were these little Sergeant's Dog Books,
happily printed with some red on their covers for Rednesday!
To know me is to know I love dogs more than just about anything else in this life.

Back cover

"Don't be ashamed of love for a dog.
Pet your dog and be friendly with him,
because he is a dog.
Kindness runs strong in the dog's nature
and he quickly responds to it."

The booklets contain various maladies and illnesses (along with photos
of several breeds) and suggests what Sergeant product you should use.
I have never heard of this canine ailment before, Running Barking Fits.

Each of the booklets has the following, "Senator Vest's Tribute to a Dog".

1932

1939
A portion of it reads ...

"The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master, as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in it's journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death."

The above is the dedication page in the 1939 booklet ... it is dedicated to a Mr. Polk Miller, who was the chemist and creator of the Sergeant line of dog medicines ... the product line was name after Mr. Polk's favorite hunting dog, Sergeant.

  2. Hi Beth!
Thank you so much for visiting and commenting. Something odd is going on with Blogger (for me, at least) - posts aren't showing up and others that do show up, are then disappearing. POOF!
You're so sweet, we got our doggie from the Golden Retriever Rescue when she was a 1 1/2 and now she's 11 and still acts like a puppy.
    Happy week to you!

Absolutely right, dogs and books! :)
I'm guessing these booklets were just promotional giveaways - I'm thinking they'll be fun for a doggie vignette!
    Happy week to you!

  5. I love almost anything vintage but I love the books. Very good find. Good for you too for exercising self-control. My hubby and I have watched that show Hoarders and ever since he's always nervous about too much shopping. :)

  24. Hi Brenda!
Thanks so much for visiting. Dog lovers always welcome! :)
The booklet describes the barking fits this way: "Dog begins acting in a strange way, as if greatly frightened; looks around and begins barking and running; he will continue going, barking or yelping until lost or is in a dazed state; he will endeavor to find a dark retreat and does not appear for some time."
YIKES!!! I've had barkers but none that ever ran and barked until dazed. Scary. Poor puppers.
Happy Rednesday to you and virtual dog biscuits for Abi!
