I thought I'd share some holiday red with you this Rednesday. A few weeks ago we went to the Long Beach Antique and Collectible Market. I found these fun old Family Circle Magazines from 1961 and 1964 at a booth. Oh and also this adorable little beat up cottage. Isn't it sweet?! It looks rather gigantor-ish here but it's only about an inch and a half. Cutie patootie.
Let's take a peek inside ... I bought this issue for these darling illustrations ...
and these cute clothes pin dollies ...
And of course, funny ads from long ago ... how about some "exciting new" cookies with ornaments on top?! Tasty looking, huh?!
1964
I bought this issue for these darling felt ornaments ...
Cookies of course ...
And cute illustrations ...
And both issues have columns by Gladys Taber, who I am only familiar with via Susan Branch's darling books ... she always includes charming quotes from Gladys Taber in her books. (So much fun to see people's beginnings!)

I'm so glad you enjoyed the Family Circle magazines, I thought they were so much fun. (I was seven in 1961) Happy Rednesday from much cooler than usual Southern California!
Sally
I enjoyed all the things you featured today. The Family Circle magazines are the best. You have a keepsake with them.
ReplyDeleteReally cute, I just love Christmas any time of year!
ReplyDeleteSally,
ReplyDeleteYou're not gonna believe this-but I made ,some of those felt ornies when I was a kid. I remember that owl and the birds. I wonder if my Dad still has it up with the Christmas stuff. That brought back some wonderful memories. Also that little cottage is the cutest thing I've ever seen. I love it. You found such cute things! Thanks for the comment today- My son is on his way as I write this to a trip of a lifetime. He's saved his money from working through high school and is off to 4 countries for 2 weeks. I'm so excited for him. Can't join Rednesday this week, but had to come check on everybody elses. Have a great week!
Leslie

Oh! I love that you made those ornaments, that's so much fun!!! They are so cute. I sure hope you can find yours, that would be so great!
Happy week to you,
Sally
That tiny cottage is so reminiscent of the Rednesday cottage tag you used today. Perfect choice.
ReplyDeleteHi Joy!
ReplyDeleteI noticed that too after I posted it, when I saw the photos next to each other! :)
Thanks so much for visiting!
Happy Rednesday,
Sally
I like vintage mags almost more than the new ones. The colors, content, vintage ads.....they are soooo fun. That little cottage os so sweet too.
ReplyDeletePretty nice, Christmas is just around the corner...
ReplyDeleteHow cute are those clothes pin dolls!? I chuckled when I read "Gay Birds and Butterflies"...Words aren't what they use to be. Somebody has been hanging on to that magazine for a long time!

Oh fun, Christmas in July...I can feel the breeze while eating an imaginary cookie off the pages of those wonderful magazines. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing find....I really love looking at old magazines (hmmmmmmm..I say old, and it is the same age as me that magazine, LOL)...
ReplyDeleteHi Sally! I love your magazines, and I adore that little cottage. Don't you wish it could tell you all about itself? :) Do you know the name of the illustrator of the first magazine? I love those, and that art is so familiar, but I can't put my finger on why! Have a lovely Thursday (I'm late for Rednesday!) xoxox! Pam
ReplyDeleteSally - I thought today was Thursday - lol!!! See what happens when you have summer vacation? What is left of my brain turns to mush. Sp, instead, happy WEDNESDAY to you today, and I will go have another cup of coffee! xox
ReplyDeleteWhat fun llustrations!
ReplyDeleteGreat finds. I have some similar felt Christmas ornaments - they must have been all the rage in the 60's. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Angela!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for visiting! ACK! I'm older than the magazine. Boo hoo! I guess I'm vintage now. :)
Happy belated Rednesday,
Sally
Hi Pam!
ReplyDeleteI will look up the illustrator for you - as soon as I unearth the magazines from the Everest-high pile I managed to make on my desk! How did that happen so fast?! (I'm trying to organize my craft space and instead of better, it got tremendously worse WAH!).
Happy belated Rednesday,
Sally xoxoxoox
Hi Pam again,
ReplyDeleteOh boy howdy, I sure know what you mean! Hubs has been on vacation for two and a half weeks and I no longer know which way is up.

Hi Dandelion Acre!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for visiting! That's so great that you and your daughter share a love of vintage things. My mother and I used to go to quilt shows, teddy bear shows and miniature shows together - I miss her so much. sniffle sniffle
Happy belated Rednesday,
Sally
I think by the time I finished decorating those chocolate soldiers, either they'd be stale or I'd be too old to care! LOL! Fabulous magazine photos! And, if you ever get tired of that little cottage, you know where to send it! ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Sue!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, those are really labor intensive cookies!
I thought of you when I saw the cottage. Isn't it fun how much it looks like your Rednesday graphic?! I'm going back to the antique show where I found it and hope hope hoping the booth is there again!
Happy belated Rednesday,
Sally

Hi Cindy!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for visiting and your sweet comments and I see blogger finally let you in, hooray hurrah!
Wishing you a lovely weekend!
Sally
I have looked and looked for these instructions on making clothespin dolls: My mom made these at Christmas time when we were little. A few years ago, I decided to make some and looked for these in her project closet-----to no avail. I searched and searched the internet.........no luck. I have made many since then, and still am making them, each one different, but I am thrilled to have found this finally---I definitely remember the illustrations you show of the Santa story, and the dolls. THANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteBeth Jerde
Hi Beth! I am only just getting around to your comment now, so very sorry! So glad you enjoyed the post - isn't it fun to remember holidays past?!
DeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you!
My mom also made the felt bird ornaments when I was growing up. I made the butterflies on the Popsicle sticks. I still have the felt ornaments. As an adult I started making felt dinosaur ornaments and had a dinosaur-themed Christmas tree in my classroom every year. I also make felt shark ornaments to go along with our school's shark mascot. Sally, do you still have the pattern pages for the felt birds?
ReplyDeleteHi Nancy! Your classroom sounds enchanting, your students must adore all that you do!
DeleteIt's been awhile now and I can't remember if the magazine was intact or not?? If it was, I still have the patterns. :)
Happy Thanksgiving to you and happy crafting!
Hi Nancy and Sally,
DeleteMy mother too made the Gay Birds ornaments in the 60's...and I made them myself just this past winter! I have a copy of the pattern if you would like it. Email me at ccartwright5529@gmail.com and I'd be happy to send it to you.
Cheryl
Do you have the patterns for the peacocks My daughter loves peacocks and I would love to have the patterns? You can email me at harbin408@att.net I make ornaments every year for my family. Thanks Deborah
ReplyDeleteHi Deborah (and everyone who has asked me about the ornament patterns),
ReplyDeleteI haven't been able to locate what I did with the magazine and kept hoping it would show up - so much has happened since I posted this entry in 2010, deaths in the family and illnesses, etc. and my house is all a-jumble. You might want to email Cheryl just above your comment, who so sweetly offered the pattern.
Wishing you much good luck in obtaining them!
Sally
