Shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen

If you are a child of the sixties, I think I'm pretty safe in betting the homestead on your recognizing my post title as lyrics to a famous song of the era. If you're not, you're probably wondering what on earth I'm talking about teehee!

Well ... jumping up and down over here ... we're off to see a revival of the play "HAIR" this weekend. So cool.

I saw it the very first time with my mother in 1968. Fourteen years old. (yeah, yeah, I lied about it being my 29th birthday next week) And at the Aquarius Theater in Hollywood! (How perfect is that for a time and place, forever set in memory?!)

Sadly, The Aquarius Theater is long gone but we'll be seeing HAIR at the gorgeous Pantages Theater in Hollywood.

I've looked at the song list and I'm so ready for a singalong bwahahhahahaha! I think I remember most of the songs and the lyrics. This is going to be so much FUN!

I found my scrapbook from when I saw it the first time. (I also saw HAIR for a second time, the following summer - "the summer of love, 1969", as in "If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair") It's paisley! Sunshiney, earth colors, paisley. Gosh, I loved paisley in the sixties. (still do!)

I am awash in memories of my teenage years over here ... swept away ... so great!

I'm reading the playbill and not only were the creators of the play HAIR in the cast I saw, but I also saw Tommy Smothers, Jennifer Warren and BEN VEREEN! Wow! What a lucky girl I was - wish I realized at the time.

(my ticket stub and L.A. Times review of play)
we were in row G, for all of $6.50!

(photos from teen magazine, "TeenSet",)
which I have no recollection of, at all.
Lyrics to Age of Aquarius, written down by me.

Please forgive the poor photos - I'll try and scan them later, I need to find a screwdriver to undo my scrapbook, it's stuck tight.

Okay ... me me me ... singalong time!

She asks me why, I'm just a hairy guy
I'm hairy noon and night, hair that's a fright
I'm hairy high and low, don't ask me why, don't know
It's not for lack of bread, like the Grateful Dead, darlin'

Give me a head with hair, long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen
Give me down to there hair, shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there mama, everywhere daddy daddy

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it, long as God can grow it, my hair

Let it fly in the breeze and get caught in the trees
Give a home to the fleas in my hair
A home for fleas, a hive for bees
A nest for birds, there ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder
Of my...

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it, long as God can grow it, my hair

I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy, snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty,
Oily, greasy, fleecy, shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen
Knotted, polka-dotted, twisted, beaded, braided
Powdered, flowered, and confettied
Bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied!

Oh say can you see my eyes, if you can then my hair's too short
Down to here, down to there
Down to where it stops by itself

They'll be ga ga at the go go, when they see me in my toga
My toga made of blond, brilliantined, biblical hair
My hair like Jesus wore it, Hallelujah I adore it
Hallelujah Mary loved her son, why don't my mother love me?

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it, long as God can grow it
My hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it, long as God can grow it
My hair

and ...

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius
The age of Aquarius
Aquarius!
Aquarius!

Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or derisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revalation
And the mind's true liberation
Aquarius!
Aquarius!

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius
The age of Aquarius
Aquarius!
Aquarius!

  5. Oh those were the days....I love the music from that period in time. I saw a road company production of Hair in Portland, OR, I think in the late 70s. Great memories. Thanks for visiting my blog today, I always appreciate it.

  13. Not only did I read but I sang those lyrics and it gave clarity to some of the words I'd fudged through over the years. Lucky Duck you got to see the real deal with your mama. She was obviously very cool, they were nude in that play, weren't they? Avant Garde?
And you still have your scrap book..what a collectible treasure. Thanks for sharing it.

I am praying for your dad...
