I found this fun recipe booklet at the Long Beach Outdoor Antique Market a couple of months ago, isn't it cute?
Does anyone out there remember Jack Benny? (The Mary in the title was Mary Livingstone, Jack Benny's wife in real life and also his co-star on his show.) I remember watching reruns of his television show, The Jack Benny Show - it was either on after school or perhaps I watched it when I was home sick? I remember that my mother loved the singer who was on the show, Dennis Day. So I had to grab this recipe booklet when I saw it since it was sort of a memory from my growing up years and my mom and I watching the show together. (There is a copyright date of 1937 inside.)
My mom was the Casserole Queen - any recipe with ground beef, tomatoes, onion and green peppers, she tried and made ... again and again. hahahhaha

I can only remember her making one foray into the land of jello with additions. It was made with Celery Jello. I am straining my brain to remember what the additions were??? Celery? Cucumber? I found the above photo online - don't you love Google Images?!
This first inner page is marked $12.00 - I paid $1.00, that's all I was
asked to pay by the vendor. Amazing (and scary and depressing) what
the mark-up is when you purchase items at the indoor Antique Malls YIPES!
(Hey! How seasonly fitting, Autumn Glow!)
(ack! Jello flakes! Conversely, Jello Fantasy bwahahahaha!
And the all important list of what sinks and what floats in jello!)

(oh yuck, spiced relish and cold meat plate, er, jello! and what the hooha is India Relish?
Is that like mango chutney? I loves me some mango chutney mmmmm!)

(Now I love beets, probably one of the two people in existence that love beets, so no snark out
of me there. I will have to mock and trash the salmon and chicken salad molds I guess. BLECH!)

(How to make Fluffy, Spongy Jello Creams - spongy???
Ohhhh ... like meringue-y, maybe??? Learn something new blah blah blah)

Oh wow, thanks for the trip down memory lane! YUCK! I remember every family get together with my mom's family there was always some bizarre (at least to me) Jello salad that always included some chopped up vegetables like celery and carrots and the concoction was always topped with a giant dollop of Miracle Whip. Did I say YUCK yet?! India Relish is just plain sweet pickle relish but I think the chunks of pickles are bigger. There might be something else in there but it tastes like plain old relish. Have a great afternoon, Nan
ReplyDeletePS: I love beets too!
Loved all those recipes - and your whole blog!
ReplyDeleteHappy Rednesday!
XOXO Lola & Nora:)
I love beets too. So now there ae three of us. But somehow beets and jello together just sounds wrong.lol
ReplyDeleteMakes me want to whip up some jello. I like it with just fruit cocktail in it. And it has to be red. Cherry or strawberry.
Thanks for a fun jello post.
Debra
A great booklet!! When my dear mother-in-law was alive, we called her the Jello Queen. She had a jello dish for EVERY occasion. Trying to *think* what celery jello would taste like, lol!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Gail
Hello! Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving such a sweet comment. Oh wow, does your post bring back memories. I think my favorite jello would have be the one that had the fruit cocktail in it. mmm!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day.

OOOHHH I am soooo coveting that Jello Cook Book. The Jack Benny Radio Show Streams from WMKV online. I think Sat nights. I never saw the TV show until repeats in the late 70's on PBS. And his appearances on the Lucy Show. I've listened to vintage radio shows since the mid-70's when cassette tapes were all the rage for em.
ReplyDeleteI know I've been a little absent the past few weeks. Since my Craft Show in Oct I have felt like everything is goin by fast and I'm just watchin. Thinks it's my back and legs actin up..my own fault for falling..again...and worryin about my parents health...being busy at the flower shop ( we celebrated 38 years on the 17th of this month)lol..the Brown Gingham Creations is my creative outlet..hehe..but last weekend I just decided I have too much to do to let it all get to me. It'll all work itself out and I don't have any body part fallin off so I'll just get to gettin ;)
I missed hearin from ya, but I understand when I haven't been posting anything interesting.
I'm so glad you got to pop by today. Please come anytime!
Sally,
ReplyDeleteI remember all those Jello recipes from Joys of Jello Cookbook. My Mom made a jello recipe for every occasion, usually involving shredded carrots and chopped celery. I've never seen celery flavored Jello. Mom would have loved it!
Oh I just loved this post...I love those vintage books. I'm always on the hunt for them when I go yard saling.
ReplyDeleteOh, I sure do remember all of my mom's different recipes using jello. You took me back to some special memories. Happy REDnesday.
ReplyDeleteIr must be my Lutheran heritage but I have always loved Jello....and of course ate a lot of it at "potluck" dinners growning up in the Midwest. I remember celery Jello...I thought it was great with cut-up veggies in it but I must have been the only one who liked it. It wasn't around for very long.
ReplyDeleteThanks for bringing that memory back for me today :D
Joyce
Celery jello??? Wow, I never knew they made that flavor. Great book, and a great price :-)

This recipe book is a real winner! I remember eating lots of Jello as a kid, probably because it was a really cheap thing to make. I remember some kind of concoction that my Mom made, I think with green Jello and there were carrots in there! I didn't like that, so I always ate around the carrots. Thanks for the memories Sally!
ReplyDeleteHappy REDnesday,
Carol
Jello....I love Jello and anythign to do with it!!!!! I agree with Joyce, my Luthern upbringing, and from Wisconsin....a LOT of Jello!!!! Thanks for the memories and the wonderful pages of tht booklet! I have lots of those little metal molds....:)
ReplyDeleteThere are two kinds of jello salads I make and love. I have a couple old jello booklets and I think all of the recipes in them sound disgusting. It seems like they tried too hard to come up with something different.
ReplyDeleteThis was such a fun post!
ReplyDeleteI like to collect vintage cookbooks and there are definite popular themes for meals through the decades. Jello was a big hit in the 40's, just as microwave cooking was considered the cutting edge in the 70's. I wonder what will people giggle about in the future when they look back on our era? Cupcakes? No knead bread? lol
I had forgotten about veggies in the jello, I think because I would not touch it with a ten foot pole! This was a neat booklet to find, I enjoyed this and the memory very much!! I seem to even remember when the jello boxes looked like the one you found. Happy VTT!
ReplyDeleteFun post, I love Jello~ Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMystery solved, my little jar is for peanuts, to grind them up for your ice cream. I knew I could count on my blogging buddies for an answer. Several ladies let me know. How fun is that. By the way the celery jello, my mom made it too......with celery, chopped apples and walnuts. Actually it wasn't too bad. I love seeing things like your booklet, it becomes a fun history lesson.
ReplyDeleteI love jello of all kinds, with fruits, with vegetables, and with marshmallow too!
ReplyDeleteI've picked up a few of these myself....love it!

This is great, in the 70s my Dad found a source for tapes of old radio shows we would listen to in the car on family trips and I loved Jack Benny, but I've never associated him with J-E-L-L-O - just LSMFT (Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco). There was always a Jello Salad at Thanksgiving in our house until my dad passed away - served with Ginger Mayo - ICK! Fun post!
ReplyDeleteI love Jell-O! Does anyone remember The Aldrich Family radio show with the Jell-O commercial? It went like this: Oh, the big red letters stand for the Jell-O family! Oh, the big red letters stand for the Jell-O family! That's Jell-O! Yum-yum-yum! Jell-O pudding! Yum-yum-yum! Jell-O Tapioca Pudding, yes, sir-eee!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great find. Those old gelatin recipes are a hoot. I've blogged about a few myself. Never would have thought fish, meat, veggies and hard boiled eggs were meant for Jell-o. Now you just need some vintage copper-aluminum molds to go with.
ReplyDeleteJell-o is so retro ! I love the colors and jiggle of Jell-o !
ReplyDeleteThat was cool! I always enjoyed Jack Benny. Thanks for your generosity in sharing the whole booklet!
ReplyDeleteI love Jello & the vintage recipe is wonderful !
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
~Myrna
It is definitely a treat to see this red post today. I enjoyed it very much.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my Rednesday last week.
