Calling all tomato growers & Monday Blog Love

ACK! sniffle sniffle SOB!

We planted six tomato plants in pots and they have been thriving and looking gorgeous, and lo and behold, little tiny fruit has begun to appear.

But now, three of the six are looking poorly. WAH! They have some yellowing and blackening leaves and also curling of leaves.

Do you know what's wrong with my precious tomatoes??? I'm a brand new tomato mommy and I'm so sad and lost.

Monday blog love and Gifties for my niece

(scroll down to the end of post for Monday blog love)

(I couldn't think of anywhere to hang the garland from
for a photo so I threw open the armoire and voila!)

Happy Monday morning to everyone!

It sure felt odd to not have been firmly planted in front of the computer screen as usual for a week and half.

I've been consumed with my nieces graduation gift and let me tell you, I could kick myself from here to Tierra del Fuego - I am so sick of myself and my procrastinating! ARGH!

Let's see - I only had MONTHS to work on her gift ... so what do I do???! Wait until five days before her baccalaureate event to begin. What a knucklehead I am.

Thankfully I can say, WHEW! It's done. Right down to the wire, but done. We all went out to dinner last night to celebrate Baccalaureate and at the end of the evening, I nervously handed over the bag with goodies for her and my anxiously wrought handiwork. I am listening for the phone to ring, hoping to hear she loved everything. Nothing yet (except for constant political calls - we vote tomorrow). I'm wondering if she's waiting until her actual graduation day on Thursday??? Certainly I will go nuts waiting, if that's the case.

If you're from California, you know that every occasion calls for See's Candies, so I got her the graduation hat box of candy - it came boxed in another box, with a cute diploma attached. (They taped it so I couldn't read See's good wishes for the Graduate - perhaps some subliminal message to buy lots of chocolate every day bwhahahahha!)

My niece is a major Twilight nut, so I begged hubby to run out and pick up the (just released Saturday morning) new Stephanie Meyer book for her too, while I continued to toil and stress away on her gifts.

And bringing up the rear, the two things I made for her were, a Congratulations garland and a quote book.

Free Rag Quilt Letters Pattern and Tutorial from Happy Together.
Congratulations garland inspiration from here.

Ay yi yi!

I started to type out every misstep and crazy thing that went on for you and then thankfully I came to my senses teehee.

Let's just say that I worked non-stop from Tuesday morning until Sunday afternoon, literally three hours before we had to leave to meet up with everyone for her baccalaureate celebration dinner.

Here's a few pages from the book I made ... thank you Leslie for the inspiration to include photos throughout her growing up years!

It's bare bones simple since this noodle head of an Auntie can't get her stuff together enough to allow ample time for a project. Sheesh! (hanging head in shame and kicking own patootie!)

Monday blog love

Happy Monday to everyone!

Good gravy, the weekend went by fast! Lots of errands, housecleaning and then some fun on Sunday.

Ever the procrastinators, we finally made it to the special exhibit at LACMA, American Stories ... on the last day of the exhibit. By the hair of our chin-y chin chins! We'd seen several of the pieces included before but it still was a lovely exhibit.

But first off, we went to Farmer's Market for breakfast at Loteria Grill, YUM! And then I went berserk at B & N and came home with these ... please, if you should see me about to enter a bookstore, tackle me and give me a good talking to! Ay yi yi.

Monday blog love

Waving hello to everyone!

I'm having so much fun and pleasure from visiting your blogs and all of your comments on Rednesday and Vintage Thingie Thursday. I must admit that I'm rather overwhelmed too. I guess I'm a plodder - it seems to take me so long to come up with an item to share and then I try to visit all of the blogs participating and comment and then my time seems to have slipped away. I'm a big believer in replying to comments on my blog and I just feel terrible for not doing so. WAH! Now I understand why you guys start a day early, yes sirree! I'm going to try to do better. Thanks again for all of your sweet comments, I so appreciate you and them.

Well ... I've been thinking about joining Amy Power's latest embroidery stitch-along, "Counting My Blessings". Every day I think about it. ACK! I have such performance anxiety. shiver shiver shake.

Anyway, over the weekend I picked up my fabric and threads. I am kicking myself in the rumpus! I got so dazzled by this one fabric that I forgot that I wanted a higher thread count linen, so I could have more detail if I wanted it. ARGH! Back to the drawing board, er, graph paper and start charting and see how it goes. miffle piffle posh ... kick in the patootie.

OH! We went to this wonderful nature store in the Valley on Saturday, Wild Things ... first off, there's a resident Golden Retriever, who came to greet us ... I can pet doggies all day long and not lose interest. So I played with my new best friend while my husband got down to business.

(Two monarch butterflies emerged from their chrysalis while we were there too! Neato!)

We were there to find a squirrel proof (or rather rat proof, I don't mind the squirrels) bird feeder and somehow ended up with a new hummingbird feeder and a hummingbird bell/wind chime thing too. And tons of birdseed that supposedly squirrels and rats don't like. Yeah sure. Check back with me later.

A day and half later and no birds and no hummingbirds. We've had hummingbirds for years but they are seemingly confuzzled by the upgrade in their restaurant counter! We had the traditional red plastic feeder and bought a (gorgeous) green glass one and they're like, "Nuh uh. Nuthin doin! Where's our red and yellow plastic flowers?!" There have been a couple of fly by's this morning, fingers crossed they'll eventually get brave and take a drink.

Happy Monday to you!

Festival of Books & Monday blog love

edited to add: I didn't know that today is Boobquake! How did I not hear about this?! To cut to the chase, some cleric in Iran said that immodestly dressed women cause earthquakes (or something like that, I'm late to the controversy teehee!). If I'm understanding correctly, we are all supposed to show a bit of decolletage today, for the sake of science.

We went to the (Los Angeles Times sponsored) Festival of Books at UCLA this Saturday and Sunday. Two days, one girl, one guy, tickets in hand to seven of the panels, twenty five+ authors, then book signings, walking walking walking, funky ankle, bum knee, one aching back and little nourishment on Day Two and we're still alive. WAHOO! This is the life!

Monday blog love & fuzzy brain giveaway

Helloooooooooo! Hubby returned to work today after his two week spring break. He's begun PT - sadly his knee is hurting more. Seems to me when I had my frozen shoulder that it hurt more when I began PT too. OUCHERS!

Gosh, I've missed you all! I have been peeking in of course but not had the time to really read what you've been up to. I look forward to catching up.

OH! I'm having a little giveaway. I bought two of the same magazine (15 smackers X two = dumb dodo head!) - my middle aged memory loss is your gain bwhahahhahhaha!

So ... I am gifting to you my extra copy of the current issue of "Where Women Create" ... you may already have it??? Gosh, I hope someone wants it! Stampington publishes the most wonderful of magazines. If you're not familiar with this series, it's jam packed with yummy photos and stories of well known artists divine creative work spaces and their artistic process.

Let's see I've never done this before ... hmmmm ... so to enter you must have an "active" blog - in other words, you must have posted entries on your blog, not just a blog address used to enter giveaways, okie dokie?

whisper whisper I am hoping to lure out some of you lurkers to come and say hello - wouldn't that be fun to meet new friends?!

Please post a hello on this thread and I will pick a winner next Monday morning, April 19th, say at 9 am, PST and announce it here.

Monday blog love

Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California, but girl don't they warn ya
It pours, man it pours

{Albert Hammond}

It's pouring down here right now. So odd, or perhaps my old brain isn't remembering but I sure don't remember many rainy days in April here??? (The glorious unexpected warm days come to mind, but no rain.)

The roller coaster ride continues over here ... We received a call Saturday afternoon that my husbands father is in the hospital (in North Carolina) ... my father-in-law had fainted at work and they're trying to figure out what is going on. They said that he has only 20% opening in one of his arteries (or was it a vein???) but they don't think that is the only thing going on. Please think a good thought for him.

WAH!

The good news is hubby's knee is feeling a tad better. He's off getting his MRI right now ... he no longer needed his chauffeur teehee, so I'm able to catch up a wee bit with all of you.

Oh! I had such a time crunch doing my Easter cards that I never got a chance to show you them ... not my best effort WAH!

(Sally's 2010 Hoppy Easter card)

I hope everyone had a lovely Easter! We had a nice one, albeit a pretty quiet one. We were going to see a movie early but we just didn't get it together in time. (First we were going to go see "The Secret of Kells", then we were going to go see a documentary about Disney's animation comeback with "Beauty and the Beast", then we were going to go see "Alice" as it got later and later ... then we ran out of steam.)

So with that change in plans we had the time to get a yummy vegetarian Easter lunch from Native Foods - their Spring Wellington. YUM!

(image from Quarry Girl)
I think ours looked even yummier than this and it came with delicious asparagus and the most tasty lemon sauce (her photo seems to show broccoli instead of the asparagus we received). nummers! I want more!

We DVR'd "Love Comes Softly" and "Love's Enduring Promise" yesterday morning, recommended by adorable Alicia, of Posie Gets Cozy and plopped ourselves in front of the TV with our Easter luncheon and had a great time.

Then our dear family friends, Betty and Caroline, picked us up and we all had Easter dinner out with my dad, his girlfriend, my sister-in-law and my two nieces. It was a lovely low key kind of day, spent with friends and family.

A couple of weeks ago, I had fun going through old bookmarks and finding beloved blogs from way back when (when I first started reading blogs) and some how lost them to memory ... I am going to start including some of them as reminders to myself.

Monday blog love

Happy Monday to everyone!

Did you enjoy watching the Academy Awards last night? I did! I loved Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, I thought they were a lot of fun. Wasn't Sandra Bullock's gown divine?! So gorgeous! She wasn't my pick for best actress but I love her real life persona and find her charming. My husband wanted "Avatar" to win best picture but I personally think it has some flaws compared to "The Hurt Locker", which was pitch perfect.

I've included several links to book blogs that I stumbled upon last week, in my blog love today. We're all about the books over here and excitement is building as we near our absolute favorite event of the year, The Festival of Books, at UCLA in April! Cannot wait, so much fun!

If you've been reading blogs for a few years or if you are a habitual link clicker like me, you have no doubt found yourself in the charming land of Posy. I read over the weekend that the dear author of Posy, Jane, is laid low and has been feeling very poorly for awhile. If you haven't already, I think it would be lovely to shower her with some blog love.

Monday blog love

I read last week on Charlotte Lyon's blog, House Wren Studio, that Rebecca Sower had put out a request for embroidery threads for a woman she became friendly with in Haiti, Jeannine. Over the weekend I gathered up some DMC floss and pearl cotton and sent it on it's way to Rebecca this morning. I think this is such a lovely idea and an additional way that we as creative people in the blogging community, can give to those in need in Haiti, who also put their hands and hearts to work, being creative. These women have a dream to earn a living by being creative, a dream also that many of us share.

Monday blog love

Little by little, baby steps, one step at a time, I'm gaining strength. (Now if my jaw would just release and unlock! Sheesh, so depressing!) Last Thursday I went grocery shopping with my husband - first time in weeks - he's been having to do it all himself. We went to this ginormous Whole Foods in Venice and there was a lot of walking back and forth (and back and forth again!) Saturday hubs drove me to the needlework store (yippie skippie!) and to Michael's - the needlework store clerk loves to talk and she really put me to the test. And Sunday, yesterday, we went out for breakfast at the Farmer's Market and to the bookstore. Everything pooped me out but I'm none the worse today. Hurray hurrah!

Thought I'd do Monday blog love a little differently today ... with commentary. ;)
