As we approach the holidays, I thought I'd share two of my absolute favorite things I own with you, my mom's two Dala horses. My mother always dreamed of owning one and when she finally made it to Sweden, she treated herself to these two. Not only are they so very pleasing to the eye but they remind me of my mom.
(A bit of a back story ... My mom's fraternal grandparents were Swedish. Her grandfather came over in 1883 and her grandmother in 1887 and settled in Minneapolis, MN. In the 1980's my mother and her sister went to Sweden and met one of the surviving family members. Sadly when I went through all of the tons of paperwork that my mother did save, I was never able to find a name and address for this uncle and his family. So very disappointing!)

Love your Swedish Red Horses!! Didn't know they were called Dala Horses! My parents brought my daughters a Red Horse each when they came back from Sweden and a couple of little ones to hang on the tree. I don't know the story behing them though!
ReplyDeleteLove the Dala Horses, Sally and the story behind them. I'm sorry you couldn't ever find the information re the address! How frustrating!
ReplyDeleteI edited your link for you!
Thanks so much for joining in this week!

Christmas decorations with memories attached are so wonderful. Have a great rest-of-the-weekend!
ReplyDeleteWhat pretty horses. I know you enjoy them as did your Mom.
ReplyDeleteMy eight-year-old bought a five inch or so Dala horse at an estate sale this spring-- cheap too! We just made a Dala horse garland thanks to Vintage Umbrella's (blog) idea last week. Really cute. Thanks for sharing your horses! And my father-in-law is mostly Swedish.
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful! I had a Swedish customer at one time that sent me one of these horses....a very tiny one...but I don't know at this point what became of it at the office!
ReplyDeleteI have never seen a Dala horse - they are beautiful! Where did you get the wooden Christmas tree that is displayed with the horses? It's beautiful and very unique, too.
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful. I'm going to ask my brother Michael, who lives in Sweden, if he knows about those horses. :-)
ReplyDeleteThe Dala horses are lovely. I love the story that goes with them too. How cool that your Mom was able to meet relatives from Sweden.
ReplyDeleteThe Dala horses are adorable! It's wonderful that have such a special story attached.
ReplyDeleteSorry for your loss. Honey looks like sweetie like all Retrievers.
How I love your Dala horses. They're so bright and cheery strutting their famous red coats.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you weren't able to connect with your Swedish relatives. Have you been on Ancestry.com? It is an incredible resource and very helpful.
I hope you have a great week, Sally!
Blessings,
Carolynn

Beautiful Horses with beautiful memories!
ReplyDeleteSally, You made my day a few posts back to see tiny little mice that I used to collect. They were so expensive way back when, I can't imagine how much they are now!
ReplyDeleteLoved your grandmother's lace post. Imagine the time it took to care for those. I love this post about your mother's trip to visit relatives. That means you have Swedish in you as well. Love those Swedish blogs!
Have a great week! E
