WHEW! Sorry! I am forever at the tail end of Vintage Thingie Thursday! And I must apologize again, it will probably be tomorrow before I can visit everyone.
Here's my favorite family photo from my father's side of my family. The young girl in the very center of the photo is my dad's mother, my grandmother. Oh gosh, I was thinking she was one of nine children but I just counted them all and she was one of ten. Wow! Didn't know that. I met one or two of her sisters when I was very young but that's all and I don't recall her ever talking about any of the others to me.
My father told me the following two are her graduation photos from "Finishing School". I'm guessing these are circa something like 1890? I do know that she received her credential/certificate/papers (???) to be a teacher - I found a note on a piece of paper with her grades and stating that she was qualified to now become a teacher.
Graduation photos sure have changed a lot.

Beautiful old photos. I love the group photos of the time. If you study them you can learn a lot about the behavior. Most children then were rather well behaved but most don't look very happy. I love the woman's clothing. Can you imagine wearing dresses all the time?

ReplyDeleteYou're so right, I haven't found any with smiling children yet that I can think of. And I know, my great grandmother looks like a sour puss doesn't she?! I have a photo of just her and she looks even crankier. Sure hope she wasn't a crabby pants in real life, poor thing.

Your grandmother was a stylish young lady. With medicine and pain management being what it was in 1890, I'be crabby too after 10 children. Imagine the pain of a toothache.

My Aunt (married to my dad's brother), told me that my great grandfather was a "gentleman farmer", so I gather they had some land and some money for those days. So that's how my grandmother was able to wear such fancy things and go to school. That did not last into her own life though, no more life of pretty things and position.

ReplyDeleteWhenever I see photos of large families I always picture a setting like the show from long ago, The Waltons. I always picture a big old house full of lots of laughter and love, and a few tears too I suppose. A crowded house seems so ideal to me - everyone sharing everything...all of the time...always together.
